Kendhoo

Kendhoo, also sometimes spelled Kendu, is an inhabited island in the Baa Atoll of the Maldives. It is known primarily for its rich cultural heritage and historical significance within the Maldives.

Kendhoo is recognized as the island where Al-Sheikh Yusuf-ul Hindee, a revered Islamic scholar believed to be from India, first introduced Islam to the Maldives in 1153 AD. A mausoleum and historical site dedicated to Al-Sheikh Yusuf-ul Hindee are located on the island, making it a place of religious and historical importance for Maldivians. Pilgrims and tourists often visit Kendhoo to pay respects at the shrine and learn about the island's role in the conversion of the Maldives to Islam.

The island community traditionally relies on fishing and agriculture for their livelihoods. While tourism is present in the Baa Atoll, Kendhoo's economy has been largely driven by local industries. The island’s unique cultural identity is preserved through traditional music, dance, and craftsmanship.

Kendhoo is administered as part of the Baa Atoll administration, which is under the jurisdiction of the central government of the Maldives. Infrastructure and services on the island have been improved over time, though the island retains its distinct, more traditional character compared to resort islands.
