Katberg Pass
The Katberg Pass is a mountain pass in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa. It traverses the Katberg mountain range, a spur of the larger Drakensberg mountain range. Historically significant for its strategic location during the Frontier Wars between the British colonists and the Xhosa people in the 19th century, the pass provided a vital route for military movement and supply. The Katberg Pass is characterized by steep gradients and sharp bends, making it a challenging, though scenic, drive. The pass connects the towns of Fort Beaufort and Whittlesea. The surrounding area is largely rural, featuring agricultural land and areas of natural beauty.
