Root Film

Root Film is a visual novel video game developed by Kadokawa Games. It is the second entry in the Root series, following Root Letter, and was released in 2020. The game revolves around two protagonists: Rintaro Yagumo, a young and aspiring filmmaker, and Manami Etou, an actress.

The narrative centers on a canceled television series called "Shimane Mystery Drama Project" which was abandoned ten years prior due to a mysterious incident. Rintaro and Manami are both involved in separate reboot projects of this series, but they soon discover that the initial cancellation was linked to a disturbing crime.

Gameplay in Root Film primarily involves reading through the story, making dialogue choices that affect the narrative, and utilizing the "Intuition" system. During investigations and conversations, the Intuition mechanic allows the protagonist to identify key phrases or clues which can then be used to trigger further dialogue or unlock new information.

The game features branching storylines and multiple endings depending on the player's choices and actions. The settings are inspired by real locations in Shimane Prefecture, Japan, contributing to the game's atmosphere and sense of place. Root Film is known for its mystery elements, character-driven story, and focus on the creative process of filmmaking.
