Karat (band)

Karat is a German rock band, popular in East Germany (GDR) and later throughout reunified Germany. Formed in East Berlin in 1975, Karat achieved widespread success with their blend of art rock, pop rock, and folk influences, often incorporating elements of classical music.

The band's initial lineup included guitarist Ulrich Pexa, keyboardist and songwriter Ulrich "Ed" Swillms, bassist Henning Protzmann, drummer Konrad Burkert, and singer Hans-Joachim "Neumi" Neumann. Shortly after their formation, Neumann was replaced by Herbert Dreilich, whose distinctive voice became synonymous with Karat's sound. In 1977, guitarist Bernd Römer joined, further solidifying the lineup.

Karat gained significant attention with their self-titled debut album in 1978. However, it was their second album, Über sieben Brücken (1979), that catapulted them to fame. The title track, "Über sieben Brücken musst du gehn" ("You Must Go Over Seven Bridges"), became a massive hit and remains one of the most iconic German-language rock songs. The song was later covered by numerous artists, including Peter Maffay.

Throughout the 1980s, Karat continued to release successful albums and tour extensively, both in East Germany and internationally. Their music often explored themes of social commentary, personal reflection, and historical events. Notable albums from this period include Schwanenkönig (1980), Der blaue Planet (1982), and Fünfte Jahreszeit (1986).

Following German reunification in 1990, Karat faced challenges adapting to the new musical landscape. However, they persevered and continued to record and perform, releasing albums such as Seelenschiffe (1993) and Balance (1995).

Herbert Dreilich, the band's lead singer, passed away in 2004. Following a period of mourning, Karat decided to continue with a new vocalist, Claudius Dreilich, Herbert's son. The band has since released several albums with Claudius Dreilich as the frontman and continues to tour, performing their classic hits and new material. Karat remains a significant and influential band in German rock history.
