Joseph Samson (composer)

Joseph Samson (born 1950) is an American composer, music theorist, and educator. He is known for his compositions that explore complex rhythmic structures, microtonality, and spectral techniques, often incorporating elements of improvisation and jazz.

Samson received his Doctor of Musical Arts degree from Columbia University, where he studied with Chou Wen-chung. He has held teaching positions at institutions including the University of Michigan and currently serves on the faculty of Brandeis University.

His compositions encompass a variety of genres, including orchestral works, chamber music, solo instrumental pieces, and vocal music. Samson's work has been performed by leading ensembles and soloists internationally, and he has received numerous awards and commissions. He is also actively involved in the publication and dissemination of his theoretical research, focusing on areas such as spectral harmony and non-Western musical traditions.
