Dixie (board wargame)
Dixie is a historical board wargame simulating the American Civil War, specifically the Eastern Theater of operations from 1861 to 1865. Published by Victory Games in 1984, it is part of their Campaign Series of games.
Dixie is a strategic-level wargame where players control the Union (North) or Confederate (South) forces. The game uses a hex-and-counter system. The map depicts the eastern United States from Pennsylvania to North Carolina, and westward to eastern Kentucky and Tennessee. Counters represent corps, divisions, and brigades of infantry and cavalry, as well as leaders and logistical units.
Gameplay revolves around movement, combat, and supply. Players maneuver their forces across the map, attempting to capture key cities, control strategic railroads, and destroy enemy armies. Combat is resolved using combat odds ratios and dice rolls, modified by terrain, leadership, and unit quality. Supply is crucial for maintaining operational effectiveness, and units out of supply suffer penalties.
The game includes several scenarios, ranging from shorter, focused engagements to the full campaign game. Victory conditions typically involve capturing key objectives or inflicting heavy casualties on the enemy.
Dixie is known for its detailed rules, historical accuracy, and challenging gameplay. It offers a comprehensive simulation of the strategic challenges faced by both sides in the Eastern Theater of the Civil War. It is considered a complex and time-consuming game to play, requiring a significant commitment from players. While out of print for many years, it remains popular among serious wargamers interested in the American Civil War.
