John Whitmore (racing driver)
John Whitmore (1937-2017) was a British racing driver notable for his successes in saloon car racing during the 1960s. He was known for his speed, car control, and distinctive mustache.
Whitmore's racing career began in the late 1950s, initially in club racing. He quickly rose through the ranks, gaining recognition for his performances in various racing categories. He achieved significant success in the British Saloon Car Championship (BSCC), driving for teams such as Equipe Endeavour and later Ford.
One of Whitmore's most memorable seasons was 1961 when he dominated the BSCC driving a BMC Mini Cooper. He secured numerous race wins and the overall championship title. He also raced successfully in other categories, including sports car racing.
In 1965, Whitmore retired from professional racing to focus on business interests and later became involved in motorsport driver coaching and advanced driving instruction. He is remembered as one of the leading saloon car racers of his era. He died on January 6, 2017, at the age of 79.
