Wonchi (volcano)

Wonchi is a dormant volcano located in Ethiopia, situated approximately 90 kilometers west of Addis Ababa. It is known for its large caldera, formed by a massive eruption in the Pleistocene epoch. Inside the caldera lies a crater lake, also named Wonchi, which is a significant tourist attraction.

The caldera rim reaches elevations of over 3,600 meters, while the lake surface sits at around 2,400 meters. The surrounding landscape is characterized by forests, agricultural land, and smaller settlements. Several hot springs and fumaroles are also present within the caldera, indicating ongoing geothermal activity, although the volcano is not considered currently active.

Wonchi Lake contains several islands, including one with a monastery called Cherkos. The volcano and surrounding area are of significant ecological and cultural importance. Agricultural practices, including farming and livestock grazing, are common in the area. The local Oromo people have a deep connection to the volcano and its resources.

Accessibility to Wonchi can be challenging, requiring a combination of road travel and hiking. However, the scenic beauty and unique geological features make it a popular destination for both domestic and international visitors. Preservation efforts are ongoing to protect the natural environment and cultural heritage of the Wonchi area.
