Titran

Titran is an island located in the Frøya municipality of Trøndelag county, Norway. It is situated off the northwestern coast of the island of Frøya, within the Frohavet sea.

Historically, Titran was a significant fishing village and trading post. Its location provided access to rich fishing grounds, making it an important center for the fishing industry. The island's economy and population fluctuated depending on the success of the fishing season.

The island is known for the Titran Chapel, a wooden church built in 1873. The chapel serves the local community and is a landmark on the island.

Titran was severely affected by the Titran Accident ( Titran-ulykken ) on October 14, 1899, when a sudden storm struck the fishing fleet. Over 140 fishermen lost their lives, primarily from Titran and surrounding areas, marking one of the worst maritime disasters in Norwegian history. A memorial stands on the island to commemorate this event.

Today, Titran is a tourist destination, attracting visitors interested in its history, natural beauty, and coastal scenery. The island offers opportunities for fishing, hiking, and exploring the surrounding archipelago. Accommodation and other tourist facilities are available. The island's population is small and dependent on a combination of tourism and fishing.
