John Turnbull (priest)

John Turnbull (fl. 1811-1847) was a Scottish Episcopalian priest and hymnwriter. He served as the incumbent of St. George's Chapel, Alloa, Scotland from 1811 until his death in 1847. While little is definitively known about his life beyond his clerical duties, Turnbull is primarily remembered for his contribution to hymnody, specifically authoring the hymn "God of Mercy, God of Grace". This hymn, distinguished by its emphasis on divine grace and universal salvation, has been included in numerous hymnals across various Christian denominations. Its enduring popularity attests to Turnbull's influence on congregational worship, even in the absence of extensive biographical documentation.
