John Purcell (physician)

John Purcell (1764-1849) was an American physician and educator. He was born in Charleston, South Carolina, and received his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1788. He practiced medicine in Charleston for many years, becoming a prominent figure in the local medical community.

Purcell was a professor of obstetrics at the Medical College of South Carolina, a position he held for several decades. He was known for his dedication to his students and his commitment to advancing medical knowledge. He also served as president of the Medical Society of South Carolina.
