John Purcell (physician)

John Purcell (1764-1849) was an American physician and educator. He was born in Charleston, South Carolina, and received his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1788. He practiced medicine in Charleston for many years, becoming a prominent figure in the local medical community.

Purcell was a professor of obstetrics at the Medical College of South Carolina, a position he held for several decades. He was known for his dedication to his students and his commitment to advancing medical knowledge. He also served as president of the Medical Society of South Carolina.

Beyond his medical career, Purcell was also involved in civic affairs. He was a member of the South Carolina legislature and served on various committees. He was a respected citizen of Charleston and contributed significantly to the city's intellectual and cultural life. His writings included essays on medical topics and reflections on contemporary issues. He died in Charleston in 1849.
