John Higson (antiquary)

John Higson (1792-1871) was an English antiquary, historian, and local historian, primarily known for his contributions to the history of Lancashire, particularly the area of Lees and Ashton-under-Lyne.

Higson was born in Lees, Lancashire and spent much of his life dedicated to researching and documenting the history, genealogy, and customs of the local area. He was a meticulous researcher, drawing upon primary sources such as parish registers, wills, and estate papers to compile his works.

His most notable publication is "Gorton Historical Recorder; or, a History of the Manors of Gorton, Openshaw, and Ardwick, including an Elucidation of the Early History of Manchester," published in 1852. While the title mentions Gorton, Openshaw, and Ardwick, the book contains valuable information pertaining to Ashton-under-Lyne and its surrounding areas. He also published numerous articles and papers in local historical journals.

Higson was a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London. His work is considered a valuable resource for researchers studying the local history of Lancashire, particularly during the 18th and 19th centuries. His commitment to preserving and disseminating local historical knowledge has cemented his reputation as a significant figure in the study of Lancashire antiquities.
