James Robertson (British Army officer)

James Robertson was a British Army officer who served during the American Revolutionary War. He was a significant figure in the British administration of occupied territories, particularly New York City.

Robertson entered the army as an ensign in the 16th Regiment of Foot in 1727. He saw extensive service during the War of the Austrian Succession and the Seven Years' War, rising through the ranks to become a lieutenant colonel.

During the American Revolutionary War, Robertson was appointed quartermaster-general to the British forces. He played a crucial role in securing supplies and managing logistics for the army. After the British captured New York City in 1776, Robertson became a leading figure in its military government. He was promoted to Major General in 1777.

Robertson's responsibilities in New York included supervising the resettlement of Loyalists and overseeing the administration of the city. He was particularly involved in efforts to encourage deserters from the Continental Army to enlist in British service and in establishing Loyalist militia units. He served as commander of British forces in New York until 1783.

After the war, Robertson continued in the British Army, eventually reaching the rank of General. He died in 1788. His tenure in New York was marked by both successes in maintaining order and securing the city for the British, and criticisms regarding the harsh treatment of some American prisoners and the displacement of civilian populations. His actions and decisions reflect the complexities of British governance during a period of intense conflict and societal upheaval.
