Jakuzi

A Jakuzi is a brand name, now widely used generically, for a type of hydrotherapy bathtub or whirlpool bath. The term is frequently used to refer to any jetted bathtub, regardless of the manufacturer.

Originating as a family-owned company, Jakuzi was founded in 1956 by seven Italian immigrant brothers named Jacuzzi (the name was later Anglicized to Jakuzi). They initially focused on agricultural pumps. In 1968, Candido Jacuzzi created a pump that could be submerged in a bathtub, aiming to provide hydrotherapeutic relief for his son who had rheumatoid arthritis.

This innovation led to the creation of the first integrated whirlpool bath. The company further developed and marketed the concept of hydrotherapy for personal use, leading to the widespread popularity of the Jakuzi brand.

Over time, the name "Jakuzi" has become synonymous with jetted bathtubs in general, similar to how "Kleenex" is often used to refer to any facial tissue. While the Jakuzi brand continues to exist, the term is commonly used to describe any bath with water jets designed for massage and relaxation. Modern "Jakuzis" or whirlpool baths often include features such as adjustable jets, heating elements to maintain water temperature, and built-in cleaning systems.
