Jacatra (cicada)

Jacatra is an obsolete term, specifically the historical name for the city now known as Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia. The name "Jacatra" was prevalent during the early 17th century, particularly during the period of Dutch colonial influence. The origin of the name is believed to be derived from the Sundanese language, and its connection to cicadas is not direct or etymologically established. While some sources suggest a possible association with the local fauna, including cicadas, the primary significance of "Jacatra" lies in its historical usage as the city's name. The Dutch East India Company renamed the city Batavia in 1619 after seizing it, thus superseding the name Jacatra in official contexts. However, "Jacatra" persisted in some circles and historical records. The name Jakarta was officially adopted after Indonesian independence.
