USS Barbet (AMc-38)

The USS Barbet (AMc-38) was an Accentor-class coastal minesweeper built for the United States Navy during World War II. She was named after the barbet, a bird of the family Capitonidae. Laid down by the Fulton Shipyard, Antioch, California, on 16 February 1941, she was launched on 17 May 1941, sponsored by Mrs. A. C. Freas, and commissioned on 16 October 1941, Lieutenant, USNR, R. B. Loper in command.

Barbet initially served in the 12th Naval District, operating out of San Francisco, California. She performed patrol and minesweeping duties along the coast of California, contributing to the defense of the Pacific coastline during the early years of the war. Her operations primarily involved keeping harbors and shipping lanes clear of mines and other navigational hazards.

Details regarding her decommissioning and final disposition are currently inconsistent and require further verification. Available records suggest she remained in service until after the war, but definitive information on her eventual fate is difficult to confirm. Further research is needed to provide a complete account of her service history after World War II and her ultimate decommissioning.
