Kevin White (politician)

Kevin Hagan White (September 25, 1929 – January 27, 2012) was an American politician who served as the Mayor of Boston, Massachusetts, from 1968 to 1984. A member of the Democratic Party, White's tenure was marked by significant urban development projects, racial tensions, and controversies surrounding patronage and corruption.

Born in Boston, White graduated from Williams College and earned a law degree from Boston College Law School. He served in the Massachusetts Secretary of the Commonwealth's office for several years before being elected Secretary himself in 1960, a position he held until his election as mayor.

As mayor, White oversaw the construction of Faneuil Hall Marketplace, a major urban renewal project that transformed a derelict area into a vibrant marketplace and tourist destination. He also implemented programs aimed at improving education and housing. White cultivated relationships with artists and musicians, attracting cultural events and fostering a sense of civic pride.

However, his administration was also plagued by accusations of corruption and patronage. Several members of his staff were indicted on various charges, though White himself was never directly implicated. Racial tensions were a constant challenge during his time in office, particularly in relation to school desegregation and busing policies mandated by the courts. The busing crisis in the 1970s led to significant unrest and violence in Boston.

White ran for the Democratic nomination for Vice President of the United States in 1972, but withdrew his candidacy before the convention. He considered running for governor of Massachusetts on several occasions but ultimately chose not to challenge incumbent governors.

After leaving office, White worked as a lecturer at Boston University and remained involved in civic affairs. He passed away in 2012, leaving behind a complex legacy as a transformative but controversial figure in Boston's history. He is remembered for his vision, political skill, and the controversies that shadowed his time in office.
