Battle of Sarrin (June–July 2015)

The Battle of Sarrin was a military engagement that took place between June and July 2015 during the Syrian Civil War. It primarily involved Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG) and allied forces fighting against the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) for control of the town of Sarrin and surrounding areas in the northern Raqqa Governorate of Syria.

The battle was strategically significant due to Sarrin's location on a key supply route for ISIS, connecting the city of Raqqa (ISIS's de facto capital) with other ISIS-held territories to the west. Securing Sarrin would significantly disrupt ISIS's logistical capabilities and communication lines.

The YPG, backed by air support from the U.S.-led coalition, launched an offensive to capture Sarrin. The fighting was intense, characterized by house-to-house combat and the use of improvised explosive devices (IEDs) by ISIS. The YPG gradually advanced, overcoming ISIS defenses and pushing the militants out of the town and surrounding villages.

By the end of July 2015, the YPG and its allies had successfully captured Sarrin, inflicting significant losses on ISIS fighters and seizing a strategic foothold in the region. The victory at Sarrin contributed to the broader YPG-led campaign to weaken ISIS's control over northern Syria. After the battle, the YPG established control over the area, working to clear mines and IEDs, and establish local governance. The capture of Sarrin also allowed the YPG to further isolate ISIS-held territories.
