Interstate 295 (New York)

Interstate 295 (I-295) is an Interstate Highway in the New York City borough of Staten Island. It is a relatively short route, spanning approximately 13 miles (21 km) from the Outerbridge Crossing at the New Jersey state line to the Staten Island Expressway (I-278). I-295 forms part of the larger Belt Parkway system.

The highway primarily serves as a north-south artery connecting Staten Island with New Jersey via the Outerbridge Crossing and providing access to Brooklyn and the rest of New York City via the Staten Island Expressway (I-278), the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge, and the Gowanus Expressway.

Originally planned as part of a much larger interstate network within New York City, I-295 represents a portion of those unfulfilled plans. The route's construction involved significant disruption to local communities, a factor that contributed to the cancellation of other proposed interstate extensions in the city.

I-295 is primarily a six-lane highway, experiencing moderate to high traffic volumes, especially during peak hours. It is a major commuter route for residents of Staten Island traveling to and from other parts of the city and New Jersey.

The highway is maintained by the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT). Its exits are numbered sequentially, beginning at the Outerbridge Crossing.
