Hungarian Civic Party (Romania)
The Hungarian Civic Party (Romanian: Partidul Civic Maghiar, Hungarian: Magyar Polgári Párt) was a political party in Romania representing the Hungarian minority. It was founded in 2008 by Jenő Szász, the former mayor of Sfântu Gheorghe.
The party's platform focused on promoting the rights and interests of the Hungarian community in Romania, advocating for greater autonomy, and preserving Hungarian language and culture. The party generally positioned itself as a more conservative and nationalist alternative to the Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania (DAHR/RMDSZ), the dominant Hungarian party.
The Hungarian Civic Party participated in several local and parliamentary elections in Romania but failed to achieve significant electoral success. It never secured representation in the Romanian Parliament.
In 2014, the Hungarian Civic Party merged with the Hungarian People's Party of Transylvania (Erdélyi Magyar Néppárt) to form the Hungarian National Council of Transylvania (Erdélyi Magyar Nemzeti Tanács - EMNT). This merger aimed to consolidate the political representation of the Hungarian minority in Romania and provide a stronger voice for their interests. The EMNT is now primarily an umbrella organization representing various Hungarian cultural and political interests in Transylvania, rather than a strictly political party contending in Romanian elections.
