Igor Ivanov (politician, born 1937)
Igor Sergeyevich Ivanov (born June 28, 1937) is a Soviet and Russian politician and diplomat. He served in various high-ranking positions within the Soviet and Russian governments throughout his career.
Ivanov graduated from the Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO). He began his career in the Soviet Foreign Ministry and held various positions in the Soviet embassy in Spain and the Soviet mission to the United Nations in Geneva.
Following the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Ivanov continued to work in the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He served as First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs before being appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs of Russia in 1998. He held this position until 2004. During his tenure as Foreign Minister, Ivanov played a key role in shaping Russian foreign policy, particularly in relations with the United States, Europe, and countries in the former Soviet Union. He was involved in negotiations and diplomatic efforts concerning issues such as arms control, the Balkans, and counter-terrorism.
After leaving the post of Foreign Minister, Ivanov served as Secretary of the Security Council of Russia from 2004 to 2007. Since leaving government service, Ivanov has been involved in various academic and advisory roles, including positions at the Institute of World Economy and International Relations (IMEMO) of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
