Hugh Maguire (violinist)

Hugh Maguire (1927-2013) was a prominent Irish violinist, conductor, and concertmaster. He was best known for his leadership roles in several renowned ensembles, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the BBC Symphony Orchestra, and the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields.

Maguire studied at the Royal College of Music in London, where he later became a professor. His playing was characterized by its lyrical tone, technical precision, and musical integrity. He was highly regarded as a chamber musician and soloist, performing extensively throughout Europe and the United States.

As concertmaster, Maguire contributed significantly to the distinctive sounds of the orchestras he led. He was particularly influential in the development of the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields under the direction of Sir Neville Marriner, helping to establish its international reputation for its clean, articulate performances of Baroque and Classical repertoire.

In addition to his orchestral and chamber music activities, Maguire also enjoyed a successful career as a conductor, leading various orchestras and ensembles in both concert and recording settings. He left a substantial discography of recordings as both soloist and orchestral leader.
