William Harris (Birmingham Liberal)
William Harris (1844 – 1925) was a prominent Liberal politician in Birmingham, England during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He was a key figure in local government and played a significant role in the city's development.
Born into a family involved in the brass founding industry, Harris initially pursued a career in business before dedicating himself to public service. He served as a Birmingham City Councillor for many years, representing various wards including Balsall Heath.
Harris was a strong advocate for municipal reform and social improvement. He championed initiatives related to public health, education, and housing. He was particularly interested in the provision of affordable housing for working-class families.
He was a noted orator and debater, effectively advocating for Liberal policies and challenging Conservative opposition. Though he never stood for Parliament, his influence within Birmingham Liberal circles was considerable. His political career was closely tied to the Chamberlain family, initially supporting Joseph Chamberlain's radical Liberalism and later remaining aligned with the Liberal Unionist wing after the Home Rule split.
