USS Leyte (ARG-8)

The USS Leyte (ARG-8), named after the Battle of Leyte in the Pacific Theater of World War II, was a landing craft repair ship of the Ashland class in the United States Navy. Commissioned in 1944, she served extensively in the Pacific during the later stages of the war, providing crucial maintenance and repair facilities for landing craft supporting amphibious operations. Her duties included hull repairs, engine overhauls, and the repair of electronic and weapons systems of various types of landing craft, allowing them to return to service quickly.

Following World War II, the USS Leyte continued to serve in various capacities, including participation in training exercises and support for naval operations. She was eventually decommissioned in the late 1950s. Although not a combat vessel in the traditional sense, the Leyte played a vital logistical role, contributing significantly to the success of Allied amphibious landings. Her service highlights the importance of support ships in enabling combat operations.
