Chip (snack)

A chip, in the context of food, refers to a thin, often crispy slice of food that has been either fried, baked, dried, or otherwise processed. Typically, the term "chip" is used to describe thin slices of potatoes (potato chips), but it can also refer to similar preparations made from other root vegetables (like taro or sweet potatoes), fruits (like plantains), or even processed dough.

Potato chips are perhaps the most well-known type of chip. These are made by thinly slicing potatoes, frying them until crispy, and then seasoning them with salt and various flavorings.

The term "chip" is sometimes used interchangeably with "crisp," particularly in British English, where "crisps" refer to what Americans typically call "potato chips."

Beyond potatoes, vegetable chips are a growing category and can include beets, parsnips, carrots, and other root vegetables that are sliced, seasoned, and dehydrated or baked. Tortilla chips, made from corn tortillas that are cut into wedges and fried or baked, are also considered chips and are often served with dips like salsa or guacamole.

Chips are generally considered a snack food, often high in fat, salt, and carbohydrates. Variations in processing and ingredients exist, resulting in chips with different nutritional profiles.
