Floy Joy (album)
Floy Joy is the seventh studio album by The Supremes, released by Motown Records in 1972. It marked a further evolution in the group's sound and direction following the departure of Florence Ballard and the subsequent addition of Jean Terrell.
The album's title track, "Floy Joy," was a Top 20 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 and a Top 5 hit on the Billboard R&B chart. The album itself reached the Top 50 on the Billboard 200 chart.
Beyond the hit single, Floy Joy explored a variety of musical styles, including funk, soul, and pop. The album features covers of songs by other artists, as well as original compositions. It showcased Jean Terrell's lead vocals alongside Mary Wilson and Cindy Birdsong's harmonies. While not as commercially successful as some of The Supremes' earlier albums, Floy Joy is considered a significant entry in their discography, demonstrating their continued adaptability and artistic growth in the post-Diana Ross era. It is noted for its strong vocal performances and sophisticated production.
