Punan Bah

Punan Bah is an ethnic group indigenous to Sarawak, Malaysia, primarily found along the Rejang River and its tributaries. They are considered one of the smallest and least studied of the Punan groups in Sarawak.

Historically, the Punan Bah were nomadic hunter-gatherers, relying on the rainforest for sustenance. Their traditional lifestyle involved hunting wild animals, collecting forest products such as rattan and damar, and practicing shifting cultivation on a small scale.

Over time, many Punan Bah have settled in permanent villages and adopted agriculture as a primary means of livelihood. Some have also become involved in logging and other industries. Despite these changes, they strive to maintain aspects of their traditional culture, including their unique language, customs, and social structure.

The Punan Bah language is related to other Punan languages spoken in Sarawak, but it has its own distinct characteristics. Their social organization is based on kinship and community ties. Traditional beliefs and practices, including animism and ancestor worship, still hold significance in their lives.

The Punan Bah face challenges related to economic development, land rights, and the preservation of their cultural heritage. Efforts are being made to promote sustainable development and empower the community to protect their traditions and way of life.
