Mammotome

A Mammotome is a minimally invasive breast biopsy device used to obtain tissue samples for pathological examination. The procedure employing the Mammotome device is known as a vacuum-assisted breast biopsy (VABB).

The device typically consists of a hollow needle with a rotating cutting blade. Under image guidance (such as ultrasound, stereotactic X-ray, or MRI), the needle is inserted into the suspicious breast tissue. Vacuum suction is then applied to draw tissue into the needle's aperture. The rotating blade then cuts the tissue sample, which is collected in a chamber within the needle. The needle can be rotated to obtain multiple samples from different locations within the lesion through a single skin puncture.

The Mammotome procedure is generally performed under local anesthesia. Compared to surgical (open) biopsies, VABB with the Mammotome device offers several advantages, including smaller scar, shorter recovery time, and the ability to sample a larger area of tissue. It is commonly used to investigate suspicious findings identified during mammograms or other breast imaging studies.

The procedure is not without potential risks, including bleeding, bruising, infection, and discomfort. Rare complications include hematoma formation and skin discoloration. The suitability of a Mammotome biopsy depends on various factors, including the size, location, and characteristics of the lesion. A physician will determine if the Mammotome procedure is appropriate based on individual patient circumstances.
