Manjushri

Manjushri (Sanskrit: मञ्जुश्री, Mañjuśrī) is a bodhisattva revered in Mahayana Buddhism. He is often depicted as a male deity wielding a flaming sword in his right hand, representing the realization of transcendent wisdom which cuts through ignorance and delusion. In his left hand, he holds a lotus flower which supports a Prajnaparamita Sutra, representing the perfection of wisdom.

Manjushri is a key figure in Mahayana Buddhist literature, particularly in the Prajnaparamita Sutras (Perfection of Wisdom Sutras). He is considered the bodhisattva of wisdom and intellectual insight. His name literally translates to "Gentle Glory" or "Wonderfully Auspicious".

He is frequently associated with the Shurangama Mantra and is regarded as a powerful protector. Devotees often invoke Manjushri for assistance in cultivating wisdom, intelligence, and memory.

Different traditions within Mahayana Buddhism present varying accounts and iconographies of Manjushri. In some traditions, he is seen as the mentor of Buddhas. He is also associated with specific sacred sites, such as Wutai Shan in China, which is considered his earthly abode.

Manjushri's importance extends beyond the intellectual realm. He is also seen as embodying skillful means (upaya) in guiding beings towards enlightenment. His representations and teachings aim to inspire practitioners to develop their own wisdom and compassion, ultimately leading to liberation from suffering.
