Holtz Bay

Holtz Bay is a small, crescent-shaped bay located on the north coast of Attu Island, which is part of the Aleutian Islands in Alaska. It is situated along the Bering Sea. Holtz Bay is known for its significance during World War II, specifically the Battle of Attu in May 1943.

During the Battle of Attu, Holtz Bay served as one of the initial landing sites for the U.S. Army's 7th Infantry Division. The bay's relatively sheltered waters provided a suitable location for amphibious landings, although the terrain surrounding the bay proved challenging for the advancing troops. The Japanese forces had heavily fortified the area, leading to intense and protracted fighting.

Today, Holtz Bay is largely uninhabited and remains a remote location. The remnants of the World War II battle, including rusted equipment and foxholes, can still be found in the area, serving as a somber reminder of the conflict. The area is part of the Aleutian Islands Wilderness and is visited primarily by historians, researchers, and those interested in military history. Its remote location and challenging weather conditions limit tourism.
