Wallace (lunar crater)

Wallace is a small, bowl-shaped lunar impact crater located in the southwestern part of the Mare Imbrium. It lies to the southeast of the crater Tobias Mayer, and to the north-northwest of the larger, flooded crater Fra Mauro.

This crater is relatively unremarkable in appearance, possessing a simple, symmetric form with a raised rim and a somewhat darker interior floor than the surrounding mare surface. The interior slopes are smooth and descend to a small central floor. There are no significant craters on the rim or within the interior.

Due to its location on the relatively smooth mare surface, Wallace is readily visible even with modest telescopes. Its coordinates are 14.3° N, 2.2° W.

The diameter of Wallace is approximately 26 kilometers. The crater was named after the British naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace, co-discoverer of the theory of evolution by natural selection.
