Hokitika

Hokitika is a town in the West Coast region of New Zealand's South Island, located at the mouth of the Hokitika River. Founded in 1864 during the West Coast Gold Rush, it quickly became a major port and commercial center. The town's prosperity was initially built on gold mining and subsequently sustained by forestry and agriculture.

Hokitika is known for its scenic beauty, including the Hokitika Gorge with its turquoise waters, and its proximity to the Tasman Sea. It is also a center for pounamu (greenstone) carving and glassblowing, with numerous workshops and galleries showcasing local artisans' work. The town plays host to the annual Hokitika Wildfoods Festival, celebrating the diverse and unique culinary offerings of the region.

Today, Hokitika serves as a service center for the surrounding agricultural and tourism industries. The town has a population of approximately 3,000 people and is a popular destination for travelers exploring the West Coast.
