USS Eversole (DD-789)
The USS Eversole (DD-789) was a Gearing-class destroyer of the United States Navy. Named for Lieutenant Commander John T. Eversole, who was posthumously awarded the Navy Cross for his actions during the Battle of Midway, the ship was commissioned in 1946 and served until 1973.
During its service, the USS Eversole participated in various Cold War operations, including deployments to the Western Pacific and the Mediterranean Sea. The ship conducted exercises with NATO allies and patrolled key strategic areas. Notably, it participated in operations related to the Vietnam War, providing naval gunfire support and coastal interdiction.
The USS Eversole underwent several modernizations throughout its career, including upgrades to its radar and sonar systems. These improvements enhanced its anti-submarine warfare capabilities. Following its decommissioning in 1973, the USS Eversole was struck from the Naval Vessel Register and later sold for scrap. The ship earned several battle stars for its service during the Vietnam War.
