Dome Mountain (Toonumbar)

Dome Mountain, also known by its Aboriginal name Toonumbar, is a prominent geographical feature located in northern New South Wales, Australia. It is a part of the Border Ranges National Park within the larger Gondwana Rainforests of Australia World Heritage Area.

Toonumbar is a remnant volcanic plug, formed millions of years ago during the activity of the Tweed Volcano. Over time, erosion has removed the surrounding softer volcanic material, leaving the more resistant plug standing as a distinct landmark. The mountain rises sharply from the surrounding landscape, offering panoramic views of the surrounding rainforest and valleys.

The mountain's slopes are covered in lush subtropical rainforest, supporting a rich diversity of plant and animal life. Significant flora includes various species of eucalyptus, rainforest trees, and epiphytes. The fauna includes native birds, reptiles, mammals (including marsupials), and a variety of insects.

Toonumbar holds significant cultural importance for local Aboriginal communities, representing a place of traditional connection and spiritual significance. The Aboriginal name, Toonumbar, reflects this connection.

Access to Dome Mountain is possible via hiking trails within the Border Ranges National Park. These trails offer opportunities for bushwalking, birdwatching, and enjoying the natural beauty of the region. Visitors should be aware that the trails can be challenging due to the steep terrain and variable weather conditions.
