Robert H. Jackson (photographer)

Robert H. Jackson (1934 – 2009) was an American photojournalist known for his iconic image of Jack Ruby shooting Lee Harvey Oswald in Dallas, Texas, on November 24, 1963. This photograph, taken while Jackson was working for the Dallas Times Herald, earned him the 1964 Pulitzer Prize for Photography.

Jackson began his photography career in the U.S. Air Force. After his military service, he worked for several newspapers, including the Dallas Times Herald. His photo of Ruby shooting Oswald is widely regarded as one of the most important news photographs ever taken. It captured a pivotal moment in American history and became symbolic of the chaotic aftermath of President John F. Kennedy's assassination.

Beyond the Ruby-Oswald photograph, Jackson covered a range of news events throughout his career, demonstrating his skill and dedication to photojournalism. He continued to work as a photographer until his retirement.

Following his death in 2009, much of Jackson's archive, including prints and negatives, was donated to the Dolph Briscoe Center for American History at the University of Texas at Austin. This collection provides valuable insight into his career and the events he covered.
