Tower Theater (Miami, Florida)
The Tower Theater is a historic movie theater in the Little Havana neighborhood of Miami, Florida. Opened in 1926, it is one of Miami's oldest cultural landmarks. The theater was designed in the Art Deco style by architect Robert Law Weed, and it originally screened films in English for the surrounding Anglo-American population.
As the demographics of Little Havana shifted, the Tower Theater adapted, becoming the first Miami theater to screen Spanish-language films with English subtitles. This played a significant role in integrating the growing Cuban community into the cultural life of the city.
In 2002, the theater was acquired by Miami Dade College, which undertook a significant restoration project. Today, the Tower Theater operates as an art house cinema showcasing independent, international, and repertory films. It also hosts film festivals, lectures, and cultural events. The Tower Theater remains a vital center for film and arts in Miami, and a significant symbol of Little Havana's cultural heritage. The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
