Frida Uhl

Frida Uhl (born 21 April 1872 in Aussig an der Elbe, Austria-Hungary, died 22 June 1943 in London) was an Austrian writer, translator, and journalist. She is primarily known for her relationship with the Swedish playwright August Strindberg.

Uhl was the daughter of Friedrich Uhl, the editor of the Wiener Zeitung, and Maria Uhl (née Köhler). She was a modern, independent woman for her time, pursuing a career as a writer and journalist. She became acquainted with Strindberg in 1893 in Berlin. They married on 2 May 1893 on the island of Heligoland. The marriage was tumultuous and short-lived, officially ending in 1897. They had one daughter together, Kerstin.

Following her separation from Strindberg, Uhl continued her literary pursuits. She wrote novels, short stories, and articles, often focusing on themes of female independence and societal critique. She also worked as a translator, primarily from Scandinavian languages. Her work offers insights into the intellectual and artistic circles of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
