The Jaffna (aircraft)
The Jaffna was an Il-76 cargo aircraft operated by Expo Aviation (now FitsAir) that was destroyed in a terrorist attack on April 29, 1998, at Jaffna Airport in Sri Lanka. The aircraft, registration number 4R-EXP, was carrying cargo for the Sri Lankan military when it was attacked by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), also known as the Tamil Tigers. The attack involved mortar fire and resulted in the complete destruction of the aircraft and the deaths of several crew members. The event highlighted the vulnerability of civilian aircraft operating in conflict zones and remains a significant incident in the history of aviation in Sri Lanka.
