Hillsborough (Walkerton, Virginia)
Hillsborough is an unincorporated community located in Walkerton, King and Queen County, Virginia, United States. Situated along the Mattaponi River, Hillsborough is historically significant as a port town that flourished in the 18th and 19th centuries. Its strategic location facilitated the transport of agricultural goods, primarily tobacco, from the surrounding plantations to markets further afield.
During its peak, Hillsborough boasted wharves, warehouses, a post office, and various commercial establishments that catered to the needs of the local planters and river trade workers. The community served as a vital link in the regional economy, connecting the rural hinterland to larger trading centers.
Over time, with the advent of railroads and the decline of river-based commerce, Hillsborough experienced a gradual decline in its economic importance. However, its historical character and scenic riverfront location have preserved its distinct identity within King and Queen County. Today, Hillsborough is characterized by its historic homes, rural landscapes, and its association with the Mattaponi River. It remains a predominantly residential area with a strong sense of community.
