Zhinvali

Zhinvali is a settlement located in the Dusheti Municipality of Mtskheta-Mtianeti region in Georgia. It is situated near the Zhinvali Reservoir, an important hydroelectric power source for the country.

The area is historically significant, having been part of the medieval Georgian kingdoms. Prior to the creation of the reservoir in the 1980s, the valley held several villages and historical sites. These sites were either relocated or submerged under the water. Notably, the submerged area included remains of churches and archaeological sites that were studied and documented before inundation.

The Zhinvali Dam impounds the Aragvi River, forming the reservoir. The dam contributes substantially to Georgia's energy production and helps regulate water flow in the Aragvi River basin.

The area surrounding Zhinvali is characterized by mountainous terrain and forest landscapes. It is accessible by road and serves as a gateway to other regions of the Georgian highlands, including the popular tourist destinations of Gudauri and Kazbegi. The reservoir itself is a scenic attraction, drawing visitors interested in its natural beauty and opportunities for recreation.
