The State (comedy troupe)

The State was an American sketch comedy troupe that originally formed in 1988 at New York University. The troupe consisted of eleven members: Michael Ian Black, Robert Ben Garant, Todd Holoubek, Michael Patrick Jann, Thomas Lennon, Joe Lo Truglio, Ken Marino, Michael Showalter, David Wain, and Kevin Allison. Erren Gottlieb was considered an unofficial twelfth member.

The group gained notoriety for their live performances in New York City comedy clubs before landing a television series of the same name, The State, which aired on MTV from 1993 to 1995. The show was known for its absurdist and often surreal humor, character-based sketches, and catchphrases. Many of the sketches were short, punchy, and relied on quick cuts and bizarre scenarios.

Following the cancellation of The State on MTV, the members pursued individual projects and collaborations. Several members went on to successful careers in television and film, both in front of and behind the camera. Notable post-State projects include the television series Viva Variety, Reno 911!, and the film Wet Hot American Summer (and its subsequent sequels and series), all of which involved multiple members of The State.

The group has reunited on several occasions for live performances and have remained influential in the world of alternative comedy. While they have never formally announced an end to the group, they have largely pursued individual careers since their television show concluded. Their legacy continues to influence contemporary sketch comedy and is remembered for its innovative and unconventional approach.
