HMS Valhalla (1917)

HMS Valhalla was a Thornycroft Type M destroyer built for the Royal Navy during World War I. Commissioned in 1917, she served throughout the remainder of the war, primarily in anti-submarine patrols and convoy escort duties in the English Channel and Western Approaches. She was built by John I. Thornycroft & Company, Woolston.

As a Type M destroyer, Valhalla displaced approximately 1,060 tons and was armed with three 4-inch guns and two 21-inch torpedo tubes. She also carried depth charges for anti-submarine warfare. Her design was a refinement of earlier destroyer designs, intended for improved seaworthiness and greater operational range.

Following the end of World War I, Valhalla remained in service with the Royal Navy. In the interwar period, she participated in various exercises and fleet operations. She was ultimately decommissioned and sold for scrap in 1931. While her active service was relatively brief, she represented a typical example of the destroyers that formed the backbone of the Royal Navy's anti-submarine and convoy escort forces during and after the First World War. No notable combat actions or sinkings are associated with her service record.
