Kogelberg

The Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve is a UNESCO-designated biosphere reserve located approximately 100km southeast of Cape Town, South Africa. It covers an area of approximately 103,629 hectares (256,070 acres), encompassing a diverse range of habitats, including mountains, fynbos vegetation, coastal areas, and estuaries.

The reserve is renowned for its exceptionally high plant biodiversity, particularly within the Cape Floral Kingdom. It contains a significant portion of the Cape Floral Region Protected Areas, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The dominant vegetation type is fynbos, characterized by its high species richness and endemism. Many plant species found in the Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve are found nowhere else in the world.

The area is also home to a variety of animal species, including mammals like leopards, baboons, and various antelope species, as well as diverse bird, reptile, and amphibian populations. The coastal areas support marine life, including seals and whales.

The Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve plays a crucial role in conservation, research, and sustainable development.
