Herefoss (municipality)
Herefoss was a municipality in the traditional district of Aust-Agder in southern Norway. It existed from 1837 until its dissolution in 1967. The administrative center was the village of Herefoss.
History:
Herefoss was established as a municipality on January 1, 1838 (see formannskapsdistrikt). It was merged with the neighboring municipality of Vegusdal on January 1, 1967, to form the new municipality of Birkenes. At the time of dissolution, Herefoss had a population of 583.
Geography:
Herefoss municipality was primarily situated in a valley surrounding the Herefossfjorden lake. It was characterized by a landscape of forests, lakes, and hills.
Name:
The name "Herefoss" comes from the Old Norse word Herðifoss, which is derived from the personal name Herði and foss, meaning "waterfall". It likely referred to a prominent waterfall near the village.
Administration:
During its existence, Herefoss was governed by a municipal council elected by the residents. The council was responsible for local services and infrastructure.
