HMS King Alfred (1994 shore establishment)

HMS King Alfred was a Royal Naval Reserve (RNR) training establishment located in Portsmouth, England. It was commissioned in 1994 and served as the principal RNR training centre until its decommissioning in 2021. The establishment provided training for RNR officers and ratings in a variety of naval skills, including navigation, seamanship, communications, and weapons handling.

Prior to 1994, the name HMS King Alfred had been associated with several earlier RNR establishments, most notably a wartime training establishment located in Hove, Sussex, during the Second World War. The Portsmouth-based HMS King Alfred continued the traditions and legacy of these earlier institutions, providing vital training to support the Royal Navy's reserve forces.

Training at HMS King Alfred was designed to prepare RNR personnel for integration into the regular Royal Navy fleet during times of national emergency or conflict. The establishment utilized a combination of classroom instruction, simulator training, and practical exercises to achieve this objective.

The decommissioning of HMS King Alfred in 2021 marked a significant change in the structure of RNR training, with training provision subsequently being distributed across other establishments and utilising more dispersed learning methodologies.
