Ehi (spirit)
Ehi (sometimes transliterated as Ehi or Ehih) is a central concept in Edo traditional religion and philosophy, referring to the individual's personal spirit or soul. It is considered a divine spark or fragment of Osanobua (the Supreme Being) residing within each person. The Ehi is believed to be the source of an individual's destiny, character, and inner guidance.
The Ehi is understood to exist before birth and chooses the individual's destiny before entering the world. This destiny is not necessarily fixed but can be influenced by the individual's actions, offerings, and interactions with the spiritual realm. Through divination and proper conduct, individuals can strive to understand and align with their Ehi's chosen path.
The Ehi is not physically located but is often associated with the head, which is considered the seat of the mind and spiritual consciousness. Regular rituals, prayers, and offerings are made to the Ehi to strengthen its connection to Osanobua and ensure its continued guidance and protection. A strong and well-nourished Ehi is believed to bring good fortune, health, and success in life.
Neglecting the Ehi or engaging in behaviors that contradict its chosen path can lead to misfortune, illness, and spiritual disharmony. Therefore, maintaining a strong relationship with one's Ehi is considered essential for a fulfilling and prosperous life in Edo belief. Divination practices are often used to identify the specific needs and desires of an individual's Ehi, allowing for appropriate offerings and adjustments to be made.
