HMNZS Moa (T233)
HMNZS Moa (T233) was a Bird-class trawler of the Royal New Zealand Navy (RNZN). Constructed in Auckland during World War II, she served as a minesweeper and anti-submarine vessel. Launched in 1942, Moa was active in the Pacific theater, primarily in the Solomon Islands campaign. She is best known for her role in the sinking of the Japanese submarine I-1 off Guadalcanal in January 1943, an action for which she was later recognized.
Following the war, Moa was decommissioned and eventually sold. Her fate after being sold is not well documented. The Bird-class trawlers, including Moa, were significant for their contribution to the RNZN's wartime efforts in the Pacific, providing escort and anti-submarine capabilities. Moa, along with her sister ships HMNZS Kiwi and HMNZS Tui, represent a notable period in New Zealand's naval history.
