John Geddes (bishop)

John Geddes (1735 – 26 February 1799) was a Scottish Roman Catholic bishop.

Born in Banffshire, Scotland, Geddes studied at the Scots College in Paris and was ordained a priest in 1759. He served in various pastoral roles in Scotland before being appointed Coadjutor Bishop of the Lowland District in 1780, with the title Bishop of Morocco in partibus infidelium. He succeeded as Vicar Apostolic of the Lowland District in 1788 upon the death of Bishop James Grant.

Geddes was known for his conciliatory approach and efforts to foster better relations between Catholics and Protestants in Scotland. He was an advocate for Catholic emancipation and worked to improve the lives of Catholics who faced legal and social restrictions. He also promoted education and established schools for Catholic children. He was a respected figure, even among those who did not share his religious beliefs. He died in Aberdeen and is buried there.
