Special Operations Engineer Regiment (Australia)

The Special Operations Engineer Regiment (SOER) is a specialist engineer unit within the Australian Army's Special Operations Command (SOCOMD). It provides combat engineering support to Australia's special forces, including the Special Air Service Regiment (SASR), the 2nd Commando Regiment, and other SOCOMD elements.

SOER's capabilities include:

  • Mobility and Counter-Mobility: Creating and breaching obstacles, construction and demolition tasks, and providing route clearance.
  • Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD): Identifying, neutralising, and disposing of unexploded ordnance, improvised explosive devices (IEDs), and other explosive hazards.
  • Combat Diving: Conducting underwater engineering tasks, including reconnaissance, demolition, and construction.
  • Construction Engineering: Building and maintaining infrastructure in austere environments.
  • General Engineering Support: Providing general engineering support to special operations forces, including water purification, power generation, and field fortifications.
  • Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) Defence: Providing a specialist CBRN response capability to SOCOMD.

The unit is composed of highly trained soldiers who undergo rigorous selection and training programs. SOER personnel are often required to operate in challenging and hazardous environments, and they must be proficient in a wide range of engineering skills. The regiment plays a vital role in enabling the success of Australian special operations missions both domestically and internationally. The SOER is based at Holsworthy Barracks in Sydney, New South Wales.
