HMAS Cerberus (naval base)
HMAS Cerberus is the primary training establishment of the Royal Australian Navy (RAN). Located at Crib Point, on the Mornington Peninsula, south of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, it is the RAN's largest training base.
History:
The base was initially conceived in 1911 following a recommendation from Admiral Lord Kitchener. Construction commenced in 1912, and the base was officially commissioned as Flinders Naval Depot on 1 April 1921. It was renamed HMAS Cerberus on 1 September 1921, after the pre-federation Victorian Navy's HMVS Cerberus, a breastwork monitor.
Role and Facilities:
HMAS Cerberus is responsible for providing a wide range of individual training courses for both officers and sailors of the RAN. This includes initial entry training for new recruits, technical training across various naval disciplines, and leadership and management courses.
